Upper Madison River Fishing Reports

*Flow Data: Madison River at Kirby Ranch near Cameron, MT

Keep an eye out for and avoid rainbow trout redds as fish ensure the existence of the next generation.

The upper has been fishing very well. The weather is all over the place this week. Warm early in the week into a cold snowy Thursday followed by warming. BWO's are here. A few Skwalas have been around as well. Definitely some dry fly opportunities out there when the weather is right. Midges are hatching daily. Fish rising when it is cloudy and the W is low. Nymphing is good with midges, worms, stonefly nymphs, and BWO nymphs. If you do not like looking at an indicator I like a Skwala dry with a Perdigon dropper. Streamer fishing is picking up and will continue to get better as the water temperatures increase. I still like the smaller bugs like Skiddish Smolts or Frozen Fox's but articulated patterns may draw a good bit of attention.

To purchase an assortment of up-to-date, hand-selected flies for the Madison River:

Montana fishing licenses are available for purchase online at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and at Yellow Dog Flyfishing - Fly Shop (some exceptions may apply). If you are planning to fish in the headwaters of the Gallatin River area above Taylor's Fork (approx. 1 mile upstream); be aware that most of this is in Yellowstone National Park which requires a separate fishing license and is seasonally open to fishing according to YNP regulations.
